Raise Public Awareness of NTDs

To the Members of the United States Congress:

The control, prevention, and elimination of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) can make a significant contribution to the elimination of poverty around the world. These diseases, which include river blindness, hookworm and elephantiasis, are the most common diseases of the “bottom billion”—those living on less than $2 a day. Over one billion people suffer from NTDs-- more than the number of people afflicted with HIV/AIDS and malaria combined. They impair the lives of those infected by making them vulnerable to blindness, disability, disfigurement, and—in many cases—death. NTDs trap families and communities in a cycle of disease and poverty that spans generations and impedes the path to educational and economic opportunity.

The seven most common NTDs can, however, be effectively treated, prevented and even eliminated for as low as 50 cents per person per year. Through an integrated control strategy, regarded as a model for global disease control, millions of the world’s poorest people are already beginning to live healthier and more productive lives.

Please help increase public awareness of these diseases by supporting US Government efforts to increase funding for the control of NTDs. By doing so, Congress will help to break the cycle of poverty and inspire other G8 nations—in addition to philanthropies, corporations, and millions of individuals—to join the fight against these horrific diseases.

I am a scientist working towards better treatments for NTD and I am convinced that enormous progress is possible as a result of new technologies that are available to scientists if only there is sufficient funding to support the adaptation of these technologies to NTDs.

Since more than a billion people suffer from NTDs, these diseases need to be priority along with TB,HIV/AIDS and Malaria.
G8 countries need to support the developing countries to overcome the problem.

Since I am working for elimination/eradication of some of the neglected tropical diseases in South East Asia Region, I am fully convinced that with available effective public health tools and support from political leaders/policy makers, the disease burden can be further reduced in near future.

I have traveled in Central America and seen first-hand children infested with NTDs and how these diseases stunt their lives in all the ways Dr Hotez and the Global Network describe.

If ever there was a way to positively, effectively change lives, this is it!

The 7 most devastating NTD's are associated with prevalent poverty. With a society that spends so much in advertising, loopholes, and advancing technology, why not invest in a mission that strives to do away with those diseases that are highly preventable?!?

We go in to a state of national mourning when a hollywood bigshot passes away as the result of a self indulgent destructive lifestyle, but we manage to let these figures fade from memory the moment something more immediately demanding raptures us (oh, the kettles boiled. What was that? 230 more preventable deaths today. What a shame. Teas ready!)

There is no reason that people should suffer from NTDs. They are preventable. We must overcome the barriers that are preventing us from eliminating these dibilitating diseases.
