The Issue

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are the most common diseases of the the world's poorest communities. Over 1.4 billion people--more than the number of people afflicted with HIV/AIDS and malaria combined--suffer from NTDs. These diseases impair the lives of those infected by making them vulnerable to blindness, disability, disfigurement, and--in some cases--death. NTDs trap families and communities in a cycle of disease and poverty that spans generations and impedes the path to educational and economic opportunity.

Why Now?

Through a cost-effective, integrated NTD control strategy, millions of the world’s poorest people are already beginning to live healthier and more productive lives. As we continue to raise awareness of NTDs, we have generated significant support from US policymakers; President Bush made a landmark $350 million commitment to NTDs in 2008, and President Obama followed by including NTD control and elimination as one of the four key pillars of his Global Health Initiative in 2009.

Yet amidst an economic crisis, we need to ensure that our leaders in Congress understand the need for a sustained US commitment to NTD control funding efforts. They need to hear from you--their constituent--that you believe supporting NTD control is a great way to improve global health and reduce global poverty.

What Can You Do?

The Global Network has started a grassroots petition, urging members of Congress to support global NTD control efforts. Add your name to our petition to show our legislators that you care about the 1.4 billion people who suffer from NTDs around the world.
